Common Questions about Waterfowl Hunting in Saskatchewan

When is the best time hunt ducks in Saskatchewan?

The fall season typically runs from September 1st through December 15th. Early September offers warmer weather and local ducks like Mallards and Teal, while mid-to-late October brings larger migratory flocks. Bay Prairie Outfitters is located in a major flyway and staging area for traveling Snow geese. We typically have them around in good numbers in the middle to later part of the season. Migrant Canada geese as well as locals are also found here in abundant numbers.

Can I hunt Ducks and Geese?

Yes, depending on time of year and conditions. You can hunt ducks, geese and cranes, included in our all-inclusive hunting packages. At Bay Prairie, all our crane hunts include duck and goose hunts as well, making this an exciting combo hunt!

What is the typical waterfowl hunting method in Saskatchewan?

Most hunting in Saskatchewan is over grain crops like wheat, barley, or peas. At Bay Prairie we typically schedule goose hunts in the morning and duck hunts in the afternoon. Most of our Canada goose feeds are in the thousands, and we hunt different ways, depending on the situation. We aim to decoy the geese in close and our hunts are second to none in the prairies. For ducks, we offer both the chance at field hunting and hunting potholes.  Either way, we're going to work hard to put you on large numbers on our memorable duck hunts.

Which species will I see on my hunt?

Duck species include Mallards , Northern Pintails , Gadwall , Widgeon , and Teal .

You will also encounter various geese, including Canada , Snow , and Specklebelly as well as cranes depending on the time of year. In recent years, the crane hunting at Bay Prairie has been fantastic.  Not only are we seeing them in larger numbers, but they're decoying great.

How do I bring my gun into Canada?

At Bay Prairie we provide Benelli M2 Outlander shotguns as a convenience, with shotgun shells included. If you do want to bring your own, we would recommend you bring two shotguns. One for back up just in case you have any malfunction problems.

You will need to register your guns with U.S. Customs in order to bring them back over the border from Canada. Be sure your gun case is airline approved.

In order to bring shotguns into Canada, print out a Non-resident Firearm Declaration form CAFC 909 and pay a fee of approximately $25 CAD. This form needs to be filled out in triplicate. Do not sign. Wait until you are in front of a custom agent and then sign. Another way is to pre-register by calling 306-975-4755 ext. 2.

If you have had any criminal offense, even a DUI, contact Beyond Borders Immigration Consulting Ltd. at 306-599-9295.

Can I bring birds back to the U.S.?

Yes, but a fully feathered wing must remain attached to each bird for species identification. You are generally allowed to transport up to 3 days' worth of your daily limit.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, we welcome dogs as long as you book a private group.
